Queen of Work

by Mandy

Dear HI readers,

From time to time, I am wont to parody songs. (Weird Al, if you're reading this, I'd love to be your apprentice). As you may have sussed out from my haikus, I am not completely happy in my current employment situation. My current gig is a pretty bad scene. And so, when a friend jokingly referred to me as "the Queen of Work," I felt compelled to spoof "King of Pain" by the Police.

With sloth and affection,

Mandy

Queen of Work

There's a few tasks left to be done today.
I've got goals to spare.
They haven't changed since yesterday
I've got goals to spare.
Everyday I come to my thankless job.
I've got goals to spare.
I pause at the door and then turn the knob
I've got goals to spare.

I've been expecting the ax to fall this way
So many things have been worse since they let me stay
I guess I'm always hoping you'll accept this quirk
But it's my destiny to be the Queen of Work

King of Pain

from Synchronicity (A&M Records, 1983)
Words and music by Sting

There's a little black spot on the sun today
That's my soul up there.
It's the same old thing as yesterday
That's my soul up there.
There's a black hat caught in a high tree top
That's my soul up there.
There's a flag pole rag, and the wind won't stop
That's my soul up there.

I have stood here before in the pouring rain
With the world turning circles running 'round my brain.
I guess I'm always hoping that you'll end this reign,
But it's my destiny to be the king of pain...
